Half Light Theatre schedules ‘Master Class’ benefit; Binghamton mayor has role

Half Light Theatre, a new Binghamton-based theater company, is planning to mark its first anniversary with a special evening this coming weekend.

On Friday (July 27), the company will take over the grand mansion foyer of the Roberson Museum and Science Center for a gala fund-raising event that will begin with wine sampling and hors d’oeuvres at 6:30 p.m. followed by a performance of Terrence McNally’s play Master Class at 7:30 p.m. Read the rest of this entry »

Student ensembles and soloists featured this weekend at BU

This upcoming weekend, there will be two exciting concerts by Binghamton University students. At 3 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 22), the University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Timothy Perry; the Harpur Chorale, conducted by Peter Browne, and the Women’s Chorus will perform in the Anderson Center’s Osterhout Concert Theater. I went to the Binghamton University Concerto and Aria Competition a few weekends ago in the Casadesus Recital Hall of the Fine Arts building on campus. TCO’s ‘Cosi’ is a must-see

 If there were any concerns about the effect of what General Director Reed Smith has described as the “significant changes” made this year by our local opera company, they clearly were dispelled last evening (Oct. 13) as I witnessed the final dress rehearsal for Mozart’s delightful “Cosi Fan Tutte” at The Forum. Tri-Cities Opera’s production officially opens Friday (Oct. 15).

Under John Mario Di Costanzo, the already-fine TCO orchestra never has sounded better. The playing was much tighter, cleaner and brighter than in some of the past productions I have seen. Di Costanzo’s attention to detail in every aspect of the score brought a crisper realization of Mozart’s brilliant writing for instruments and his understanding of the human voice. After a marvelous reading of the opera’s overture (the theme of which is repeated near the end of the opera), Di Costanzo, TCO’s new music and associate artistic director, was consistent throughout in guiding the musicians to realize a nearly perfect ensemble.
